Israel attack freedom flotilla

Israel’s attack on the unarmed humanitarian convoy attempting to break the siege on Gaza, resulted in at least 9 deaths and numerous wounded. It was only the latest outrage committed by the Zionist government over recent years.....writes Zhaleh Sahand....

The monstrous three year blockade of the Gaza strip by the Israelis government has left 1.5 million civilian Gazans in agony and despair, lacking basic sanitation, nutrition, medical care and housing. Backed by unwavering US support and endorsed only a little less uncritically by the European Union and until very recently the Egyptian government the appalling daily violence of the Israeli regime was clear for all to see after Monday’s attack.

The Israeli government brazen assault on the peace activists hit the predominantly Turkish boat the Mavi Marmara hardest, with around 600 of the 700 activists on board. The Freedom Flotilla was carrying 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian supplies (all checked along with people in board by the Turkish government) through international waters, which is at least nominally out of bounds of Israeli law. But law means nothing to the Israeli army. Israeli naval commandos stormed the ships in international waters, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Gaza's coast. The flotilla was unarmed. The Israeli commandos armed to the teeth. The resulting murders inevitable and planned.

Despite being subject to 65 UN resolutions, Israel has never been held accountable for its mounting crimes against humanity. This attack on civilian aid workers will be no different. Today Israel occupies 87% of the Palestinian lands compared to just 2.5% of the land they originally owned in 1917. It is widely reported that Israel officially receives some $3 billion every year in the form of economic aid from the U.S. government, “Total identifiable costs come to almost $3 trillion. About 60 percent, well over half, of those costs—about $1.7 trillion—arose from the U.S. defense of Israel, where most of that amount has been incurred since 1973.”

In1948 after the creation of the Zionist state 355,000 of the one million Palestinian population were forced to become refugees. When the Gaza Strip and West Bank were occupied in 1967, the UN reported that a further 200,000 Palestinians fled their homes to other parts of the world.

By 2005 the total numbers of the refugees had risen to approximately 7.2 million Palestinians, equivalent to 74% of 9.7 million entire Palestinian population. Israel has 226 Jewish settlements and outposts built on confiscated Palestinian land and has demolished 24,145 Palestinian homes since 1967. Israel claims that it is impossible to allow the Palestinians the right of return to their homeland. This basic democratic right, is not however, the only just basis for a settlement of the Palestine question, it is both practicable and possible;

“The right of refugees to return is not only sacred and legal but also possible. Demographic studies show that 80% of Israelis live in 15 percent of the land and that the remaining 20% live on 85% of the land that belongs to the refugees.

From the 20%, 18% live in Palestinian cities while the remaining 2% live in kibbutzim and moshavs. By contrast, more than 6,000 refugees live per square kilometer in the Gaza Strip, while over the barbed wire their lands are practically empty. Ninety seven percent of the entire refugee population currently lives within 100 km of their homes. Fifty percent live within 40 km. While many live within sight of their homes.” Al-Awda-Factsheet-2006

Justice is denied the Palestinians because of the interest of the United States government, which continues to bank role the Zionist state as a critical geo-political pawn in the Middle East, as a gendarme to control Israel’s Arab neighbours and a justification for its own continued interventions into the region.

It is Israel’s dependence on US support which provides the motive for the sanctions boycott and disinvestment campaign and also explains why it is so virulently opposed by the Israeli authorities, without US support and its legitimation through a relentless ongoing media campaign, then the basis for the Zionist segregationist racist apartheid state would cease to exist.

We therefore must put on the forefront of our struggle a two fold propaganda campaigns, both against US sponsored occupation of Palestine that has guaranteed the ongoing war against Palestinians through its moral and economic aids in years and Israel acting as the predators and the territorial police state for the US government In the region and abroad. And salute the courage of the flotilla's brave crew and the sacrifice they have made to break Israel's inhuman blockade.

I have received a credible report (please see below) that there may be an attempt afoot to halt the progress towards Gaza of the Irish aid ship, the Rachel Corrie (named for the US-born solidarity activist, killed by a Caterpillar bulldozer while offering passive resistance to the construction of still another Zionist settlement in the Occupied Territories).

Dear all,

Organisers of the flotilla have informed me that all communication has been lost with the boat 'Rachel Corrie', en route to Gaza with 15(?) passengers including Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire, and medical supplies. Spotting mechanism, Sat. phones and radio all out of order/jammed since last night, apparently.

It is unclear where the boat is (probably about 200 miles from Gaza) and in what direction she is heading. Israeli headlines (Haaretz, YNet) aired identical items saying that 'the organisers' had decided to turn back to Ireland but the organisers (from here) say they never decided this or said this. There is a chance that Israeli forces could take over the boat in complete media/radio silence under the cover of this misinformation.

May I suggest that you forward this to others, and see if you can get people to contact parliamentarians, government representatives, voice concern about the passengers' safety, and ask them to contact their representatives in Israel. Who knows, perhaps this might avert another catastrophe.

Emergency National Demonstration, Saturday 5th June

To show our outrage at the brutal and illegal actions of the Israeli Government, PSC along with CND, Stop the War, British Muslim Initiative, Friends of Al-Aqsa, Palestinian Forum of Britain and Viva Palestina have called an emergency demonstration for tomorrow - Saturday 5th June.

The march will start from Downing Street at 1.30 pm and head to the Israeli Embassy in Kensington where there will be a rally.

The nearest tube is Westminster on the Jubilee and District lines. Alternatively, you can go to Charing Cross on the Bakerloo and Northern lines, which is a 5 minute walk away.

There are coaches from around the country coming to London - To find out where to get a coach from click here. If you are organising transport and your city is not listed please email info@palestinecampaign.org with the details.

Public rally – hear eyewitness accounts from the Mavi Marmara

Released hostages have returned home to give accounts of Monday’s attack that differ greatly from that pushed by Israel in the immediate aftermath of the incident. Contrary to Israel’s claim that its soldiers acted in self-defence, witnesses have described how the Israelis shot to kill, with at least four activists being intentionally shot in the head. It has emerged that the truth behind Israel’s claim that activists on the boat were armed is that some passengers desperately tried to defend themselves with whatever was to hand after the Israelis began firing live rounds. Witnesses also described how the injured were denied medical treatment for several hours, as Israeli soldiers ignored pleas for help.

Come to a public rally to hear first-hand what actually happened aboard the Mavi Marmara and beyond. The meeting will feature several activists from the flotilla along with other speakers.

7pm on Wednesday 9th June in Conway Hall, Red Lion Square.

Called by PSC and Viva Palestina with Trade Union and other support.

In Sarah’s Words

Still wearing her grey Israeli prison uniform, Sarah Colborne, PSC's director of campaigns and operations, flew back to London yesterday morning, to tell the world of the horror that took place on board the Marvi Marmara. Addressing a press conference in central London, with the Palestinian flag in front of her, Sarah said:

'On Sunday 30th May, we set sail for Gaza. At 11pm, Israeli naval boats were detected on the radar and later sighted. A decision was made to move further back into international waters and further from Israel. We started broadcasting from the deck. It was difficult because Israel was cutting off the satellite signal.

Trade Unions unequivocally condemn Gaza Flotilla attacks – NUS bucks the trend

The trade union movement has rallied round in fervent support of the Palestinian cause. Yesterday, Unison joined Unite and the TUC in issuing a strongly worded condemnation of Israel’s attack on the Mavi Marmara and calling for an immediate end to the siege of Gaza.

Alongside these unions, a number of others including the CWU and the PCS have been working hard to build Saturday’s national demonstration, which will be addressed by Keith Sonnet, Deputy General Secretary of Unison, and Sally Hunt from the TUC.

Unfortunately, the NUS has bucked this trend. Its statement failed to condemn the attack or demand an end to the siege of Gaza, and requests only an Israeli-led investigation into the incident rather than the independent and impartial enquiry called for by the UN Security Council.

Student PSC is calling on students to email the NUS President, Wes Streeting, and NUS President-Elect, Aaron Porter, demanding that they condemn Israel’s killing of civilians on a humanitarian mission, call for an immediate end to the siege on Gaza, and support Saturday’s demonstration.
