Lewisham: Decent homes for all
When we heard that the 'Lewisham Gateway' planners were down at Lewisham shopping centre last Saturday we thought this is a chance not to be missed. The 'Lewisham Gateway' development, according to Lewisham Council spin will bring 'regeneration' to the area. In otherwords - the corporate takeover of public space in the interests of profit and greed.
So with pasting table and a few hastily painted banners (see pictures attached) we set up our 'People B4 Private Profit' stall right next door to their display of glossy brochures and architects' simulated designs. Our mission? - to the expose the myth that this development is in the interests of the local community. As always profit is the real motive. Only 28% of the units will be 'social housing for rent' which makes a mockery of a Council that recently passed a motion calling on all new build to have at least 50% social housing.
We were expecting the security to turn up and ask us to leave, but instead they looked at us confused and bemused and walked away! So we spent a good few hours talking to local residents about their housing issues. People came up, took our leaflets and agreed that the Council should be providing decent homes for everyone, especially those in desperate need now.
Barratts who will manage the project are more interested in making a mint selling over priced and under sized flats, if they are lucky. In the present economic situation, there is every chance that many of these flats could lie empty.
With over 20,000 families in Lewisham alone registered as homeless and many more living in cramped conditions it is a disgrace that a Labour Council would rather sell off our land to greedy developers than build homes for those that need it at rents that families can afford. That is why People B4 Private Profit is campaigning against the Gateway development. The Council could solve the housing crisis tomorrow if it ensured that any new development is a 100% social housing that we can afford to live in.
Join us next Saturday for our prime spot outside Mothercare from 11am!
