Sukula family campaign - emergency demo Saturday 10th Feb!

Sukula Family Campaign

Emergency Demonstration in Bolton

Bolton Town Hall

Saturday 10th February

1pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stop the Sukula family's forced relocation to Liverpool

The Sukula family are being sent against their will to Liverpool, and have been told they have to leave their house by Wednesday 14th at 10.00.

The Sukulas’ have lived in Bolton for six years, after fleeing the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They have established strong links with the local community, many people will have followed their courageous campaign, first against deportation and then against the possible separation of their family and denial of their right either to receive benefits or work under New Labour’s notorious Section 9. Their petition has been signed by hundreds of local residents and they have appeared at many local and national events.

Now they face a new threat NASS have instructed the Sukulas they have to leave the Bolton to move to Liverpool, a fine city with its own organisations in support of asylum seekers, but entirely against their will and against the background of a serious medical emergency currently facing the family.

Ngeidi Sukula the mother of the family has recently 3 months ago, given birth to a baby “Miracle”. Miracle was born 3 months premature and is still in hospital requiring daily visits.

In addition there are four other children who attend local Bolton nurseries, schools and college.

Yet none of these common considerations of humanity matter to NASS. We demand they immediately drop this disgraceful plan and allow the Sukulas’ to live in the community which is now their home.

Support the demo on Saturday!

Against all forced relocations!

Against all deportations!

Another reason the family cannot move is that Flores Sukula is in her third year studying health and social care at Bolton Sixth Form College. Her final exams are only three months away. But if the family are moved to Liverpool she will have to drop out of her course as it would mean a daily three hour round trip and cost forty pounds a week- money the family simply do not have. More importantly than this though is to oppose the system where NASS can dictate where people live. The Sukula Family and their campaign from the beginning have fought for the right of all migrants and against all immigration controls. However, what we also hope to do is build a strong community based campaign backed by trade unionists and local residents to prevent the Sukulas being moved.

It's important we try to make this demo as big and militant as possible. Just today less than 245 hours after being verbally informed of their eviction a letter came through to the Sukula household ordering them to pack and leave by next week. The Orwellian named NASS- National Asylum Support Service- seem to dictate that people just leave at less than a week's notice. Local people in Bolton are determined to make a stand against this. We are prepared- if necessary- to organise physical defence against eviction and removal. It is essential that all anti-deportation campaigns and workers' organisations unite against this state racist harassment.

More breaking news: Nurses from the hospital have protested, saying that the child's interests are not served by being moved and a contingent should be joining the demo. NASS are refusing to back down. Hopefully there should be coverage from the BBC and we've got a slot on BBC Manchester radio.

Just got back from Bolton: good turnout, about a hundred, lots of passers by prepared to sign petitions/letters to the home secretary. We marched from the town hall to the office of Brian Iddon, the local MP. News cameras turned out; wonder if it will get on this evening?
